A Hindu harvest festival, Pongal is dedicated to the Hindu god of the sun, marking the end of the winter solstice. Named after the ceremonial ‘Pongal’, a traditional dish prepared from a new harvest of rice boiled in milk with raw sugar which, boiled until it overflows, the sweet dish is first offered to the gods and goddesses prior to being shared among the celebrating community. Join the celebration at Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam.
CHINESE NEW YEAR
12.-13. FEBRUARY 2021
Also called “Spring Festival” or “Lunar New Year” each Chinese New Year is designated as “the year of“ one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This year, the Chinese community will be welcoming the year of the Rat. Celebrated for over 1,000 years it is a significant holiday, filled with temple prayers, ritual offerings, and joyful celebration with fireworks. Join the festivities at the Thean Hou Temple and when strolling around, keep your eyes open. You may stumble upon the legendary Lion Dance performance.
